Puppy Tears: Understanding Teething in Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Puppies

Bringing home a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy is one of life’s sweetest joys. Their affectionate personalities, expressive eyes, and gentle temperament make them ideal family companions. But just like human babies, these little ones go through developmental phases—including teething.

If you’ve noticed watery eyes or what some lovingly call “puppy tears” during your Cavalier’s teething stage, you’re not alone. This blog explains what’s going on, how to help, and when to be concerned.

🦷 When Do Cavalier Puppies Start Teething?

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies begin teething around 3 to 4 weeks of age, when their baby teeth start coming in. By the time they come home at 8 weeks, most of their 28 baby teeth are present. Between 12 to 16 weeks, the real fun begins—those baby teeth start falling out and their adult teeth start pushing in.

This second phase of teething can last until your puppy is about 6 to 8 months old.

😢 Why Do Teething Puppies Have Watery Eyes?

During teething, it’s common to notice a bit of extra tearing or mild discharge around your Cavalier’s eyes. While it might look like they’re crying, these “puppy tears” are usually caused by:

  • Inflammation or pressure around the face and gums

  • Excessive chewing behavior, which can affect facial muscles and tear ducts

  • Breed-specific tear duct shape — Cavaliers have shorter muzzles and prominent eyes, making mild tear staining more common

As teething progresses, their tear ducts may become temporarily inflamed, leading to visible wetness beneath the eyes. In most cases, this is completely normal.

🔍 What’s Normal vs. When to Worry

Normal Signs of Puppy Teething:

  • Excessive chewing

  • Mild drooling

  • Swollen or red gums

  • Watery eyes or slight tear staining

  • Occasional blood on toys (from falling baby teeth)

Signs to Watch For:

  • Thick yellow or green eye discharge

  • Swollen eyes or squinting

  • Loss of appetite or refusal to eat

  • Persistent crying or signs of pain

If you see these symptoms, it’s best to consult your veterinarian. Eye infections or blocked tear ducts may require professional care.

💡 How to Help Your Cavalier During Teething

  1. Offer Soft Chew Toys

Frozen puppy teething rings, rubber toys, and wet washcloths (frozen for 10-15 minutes) soothe inflamed gums.

  2. Keep the Eye Area Clean

Gently wipe the corners of their eyes daily using a soft, damp cloth or pet-safe eye wipes to avoid tear stains and irritation.

  3. Use Natural Tear Stain Removers (if needed)

If staining becomes noticeable, ask your vet about gentle tear stain products safe for Cavaliers.

  4. Feed Quality Food

Good nutrition supports healthy teeth and immune response. Choose premium puppy food designed for small breeds.

  5. Practice Gentle Dental Habits Early

Introduce soft puppy toothbrushes and finger brushes during this phase to prepare for lifelong dental care.
